Introduction

Fun and science experiments go hand in hand and if you are someone looking for fun, the science experiments are the ones that will serve you the best. The science experiment coming right up is not only an entertainment for the kids but is sure to help them learn a lot alongside as well.

The five-minute science experiment will be a quick one leaving behind tons of things for you to understand alongside. So, here goes a shout out to all the little chemists out there who can indulge themselves to make their very own bouncy balls at home.

Apparatus

  1. Warm Water
  2. Borax
  3. Plastic Spoon
  4. Food Colouring
  5. 2 Mixing Cups – Small
  6. Glue
  7. Corn Starch

Procedure

Step 1

Take two cups. Label them. Put “Borax Solution” in one and “Ball Mixture” in the other.

Step 2

Add 120 ml of warm water to the cup that you have labelled with Borax Solution. Also, add a teaspoon of borax powder to the same cup in which you added water. Now, stir it gently so that the borax gets dissolved properly without forming any lumps.

Step 4

In case you have food colouring, you can add it too.

Step 5

Now, use the borax solution you just made and take ½ cup of it. Also, add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to the glue. Make sure to not stir the mixture.

Step 6

Leave the mixture for 30 seconds and allow all the ingredients to mix with each other. Finally, stir them together to give a gentle mix.

Step 7

At a point, the mixture becomes quite impossible to stir. Take the mixture out of the measuring cup and use your hands to make balls from it. The ball will initially be all messy and will stick to your hands too but as you go on kneading it, the solidification starts. When the balls stick less to your hands, take it and make the balls around.

Result

  1. The bouncy ball, on successful completion of the science experiment, can start bouncing off your hands.
  2. Make sure to not skip any step while performing the science experiment.

Conclusion

The above science activity is a chemical reaction that happens between the glue and the borax. Here, in the mixture, the borax is a “cross-linker” to the molecules that exist between the glue. The cornstarch is the one that binds all of it together with one another.
