Introduction

Geodes are actually solid round rocks which are actually hollow interiorly. This hollow side contains hydrothermal fluids which are actually got trapped inside it. These hollow helps in creating the perfect crystal.

Geodes can take millions of years to form or it can be formed in just 2-3 years.

This experiment is for kids. This experiment requires only little effort or skill. So, kids can easily do this.

Apparatus

  1. Alum powder (containing potassium compulsory)
  2. Plastic bowl or moulding tool

  3. Glue
  4.
  5. Paint to colour the plastic bowl
  6. Box
  7.
  8. Spoon for mixing and measuring cup to measure the amount of alum powder to be taken.
  9.

Warnings

Usually, this experiment is not difficult to do and it does not have such things to be frightened for.

  • As this experiment is for kids, don’t allow them to eat the elements or compounds involved in this through the alum powder is edible but in larger amounts, it could be a danger too!

Procedure

Step 1

Instead of taking a plastic bowl, an eggshell can be taken. Take a plastic bowl and the plastic should not be too hard. Glue all over the plastic bowl and keep it for 3-4 hours. The alum powder should be applied when glue is wet.

Step 2

Paint the bowl or eggshell to get different color geodes.

Step 3

After this or during the process of glue drying make a mixture of alum powder with water alum powder should be 3/4th in an amount to the whole mixture.

Step 4

Make a saturated mixture. Be careful the mixture should be kept saturated to avoid failing of experiment.

Step 5

To prepare this mixture put the alum powder solution to heat to form a saturated solution. Saturation can be done to maximum time to avoid any discrepancy.

Step 6

Now when the mixture is prepared, add this mixture to the plastic or eggshell. Put the mixture in an isolated box to let the mixture dry. After it dries, have a look at the geodes, they form a crystal.

Result

To keep the mixture for some more days has the different effect. It grows to some large crystal.

Conclusion

It should be kept in mind that alum powder contains potassium otherwise it will not grow. The mixture of alum powder with water should be saturated.

The appearance of the crystal will be very good to see. It does not have any tremendous activity so kids can easily do this with interest. This science project is very innovative experiment for kids and kids will surely have fun making them.
